I found it interesting when I learned about the Special Education programs in Massachusetts. My little brother has just moved to Mass. and is classified as having a "learning disability" with a little bit of dyslexia. In New Jersey, he was excelling in all of his classes to where he was placed in mainstream classes from all of the help he received within the SE programs. However, he has informed me that in Mass. they do not have many opportunities for Special Education students. They do not have Teachers Aids, which are the assistant teachers that specifically help the Special Education children in the class to make sure they understand the material being taught. They also do not have small group rooms, where they take a handful of students with special needs and teach at their capable level of learning. I found this very controversial since I believe there should be equal Special Education opportunity in all of the US states. He is in 8th grade and is not getting the proper education he needs to accommodate his learning disabilities.
